Position Purpose

The Financial Aid Coordinator performs a variety of financial aid functions to administer financial aid programs and delivery of funds to students in support of student success. Activities include determining eligibility, awarding aid, facilitating problem solving with students and making professional judgement decisions regarding student aid eligibility. S/he shares responsibility for delivering service excellence to students on a daily basis through interactions ranging from correspondence regarding program navigation and problem solving, as well as counseling and outreach activities.The list of duties and responsibilities is representative and not a complete and detailed list of tasks, that may be performed.

  • The Financial Aid Coordinator is responsible for assisting students in their application for Financial Assistance to attend CUSM. These specific tasks include assistance in the completion of the FASFA, assisting student with Grad Plus Loans and Alternative Loan applications, and the tracking, receipt and auditing of student ISIRs. The FAC clears any ISIR comment codes and manages the student’s hard copy FA file for completeness and accuracy.
  • The FAC is responsible for assisting students in applying for outside scholarships, documentation for HSPS eligibility, VA benefits and others eligible programs.
  • The FAC is responsible for packaging student assistance awards, scheduling the awards correctly in EMPOWER tracking systems, and updating the information during new enrollments periods and subsequent school years and at student entrance / exit interviews for withdrawing, LOA or graduating students.

Minimum Requirements

  • Associate degree plus two years of higher education financial aid experience; or any satisfactory combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties listed above. Preferred if experience in a medical school setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in a fast paced, high volume environment providing support
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills to communicate and interact effectively with colleagues, faculty, students, and visitors.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide quality customer service via telephone, in-person, internet, and mail
  • Demonstrated ability to interact professionally with diplomacy, patience and courtesy with diverse groups; ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships while providing exceptional customer service.
  • Demonstrated skill in working independently and completing assignments with minimal supervision. Must effectively prioritize assignments to complete work in a timely and accurate manner under pressure of deadlines, and with frequent interruptions and competing priorities. Must be able to adjust priorities quickly, multitask and have excellent organizational skills.
  • Use of appreciable judgment in the development of policies and procedures related to issues frequently not covered by existing policies and procedures. Precedents and policies to guide development activities may be available for reference.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality of information and records. Demonstrated ability to set up and maintain filing/records systems. Demonstrated skill in proofreading materials. Must recognize and correct errors in conformance to established standards & guidelines, spelling, grammar and punctuation. Working knowledge of commonly used accounting principles and applications. Demonstrated skill in preparing and maintaining financial information and records.
  • Must successfully complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen/physical and background check through the Department of Justice.
